Susan Smith was a two-sport athlete for Lamar University, lettering in both women’s basketball and softball. She was a double-figure for the Lady Cardinals as they went 22-7 in the 1972-73 season.

Smith played softball in 1972, helping the team finish second at the state tournament.

A native of High Island, Texas, Smith helped High Island High School win back-to-back state championships in 1968 and 1969. She earned all-state honors in 1967, 1968 and 1969. Smith was a member of the Hubbard Electric AAU team from 1974 through 1983, where she helped the team win six straight state championships and finish third at the national AAU tourney in 1982.

Smith enjoyed a highly successful prep basketball coaching career at Westfield High School. She was named district coach of the year nine times, Greater Houston Area Coach of the Year in 2001 and the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches (TABC) Coach of the Year in 2004.

Smith guided Westfield to the Class 5A state championship in 2004. She compiled a 578-203 varsity coaching record at Westfield, leading her team to 11 district championships and to postseason play 19 teams in 24 seasons. She helped Westfield reach four regional finals, winning three regional championships, and three state semifinal appearances.
