Dave Hofferth became the play-by-play voice of Lamar University in the 1978-79 season. He brought pride and joy to LU fans with his thrilling accounts of LU sporting events for more than three decades.

In his first 20 years of broadcasting LU sporting events with color analyst Al Caldwell, Hofferth brought to life numerous football, baseball and men’s and women’s basketball games. Hofferth has seen some of the greatest wins in LU sports history. Like, LU’s first NCAA Tournament appearance in men’s basketball and, a year later, the Cardinals’ thrilling run all the way to the Sweet 16, which included a win over fifth-ranked Oregon State. Like, Lamar’s first baseball NCAA Regionals win in 1979 and the baseball team’s triumphs in the 1993 and 1995 Sun Belt Conference Tournament title games. Like, the women’s basketball team’s dream run to the NCAA Tournament Elite Eight in 1991 and LU’s exciting last-second 18-17 win over Baylor in football in 1981.

Hofferth has always prided himself on creating the excitement of the moment to listeners back home, and is justly deserving of the Big Red Award, which is given to any non-coach or non-athlete who has significantly assisted the athletic program.
