Cardinal Hall of Honor
When Lindley King was decorated with All-American honors in 1962, the Lamar University guard-linebacker achieved recognition as a complete player. Eleven athletes received this ultimate recognition that year when they played both offense and defense in the waning days of college football’s one-platoon era.
The All-American reward was a just climax to Lindley’s three-year career at Lamar. He was All-Lone Star Conference twice (1961, 1962), All-Texas College twice (1961, 1962) and Lamar’s Most Outstanding Lineman twice (1961, 1962).
Lindley had other big moments on the gridiron. He was a 1962 team captain. His three teams posted a fine 23-9-1 record. He recovered a blocked kick for a touchdown in the 1961 Tangerine Bowl victory, the only bowl triumph for the Cardinals.
In 1961, King was the top vote-getter at his position in being selected to the All-Lone Star Conference team. He finished his career as a starter for the winning Texas All-College team against Southwest Conference All-Stars in the Southwest Challenge Bowl.
