Cardinal Hall of Honor
For almost a half-century G.A. Wimberly Sr. served with distinction as a coach-administrator for South Park Junior College, Lamar College, Lamar Tech and Lamar University.
Wimberly began his career at South Park Junior College in 1926 as Joe Vincent’s assistant football coach. He was an assistant to John Gray in football and basketball through 1934 and head baseball coach during that period. During his three years as assistant football coach, the team compiled a 16-9-2 record.
After leaving the coaching profession, Wimberly served in several administrative positions until his retirement in August 1973, ending 47 years of service. He was auditor, comptroller, director of personnel and assistant to the president. The G.A. Wimberly Student Affairs Building is named in honor of the man who was a great athlete at Masonic Home and East Texas State, where he played football from 1922 through 1925, captaining the 1925 team.
