World-ranked tennis pro Sherwood Stewart is the only Lamar University netter to win a national championship in NCAA competition, capturing the College Division singles crown in 1967.
He won three consecutive Southland Conference doubles titles (1966 through 1968) and posted a 20-1 dual-match record in singles in 1968, setting the Lamar single-season record.
Stewart led Lamar to the 1967 Southland Conference team championship, the only year powerful Trinity University failed to win the title between 1964 and 1972.
Ranked No. 2 in U.S. men’s doubles at the time of his induction, Stewart’s biggest professional win was the doubles title at the 1982 French Open, one of the world’s top four tournaments. He was runner-up in the 1978 U.S. Open doubles.
He won the U.S. Clay Courts doubles title in 19823 and 1983 and the U.S. Indoor doubles crown in 1976 and 1977. Stewart played on the U.S. Davis Cup teams in 1977, 1978 and 1981.
