Cardinal Hall of Honor
Bill Kilgore was a four-year letterwinner on the Lamar University football team from 1964 through 1967. He helped the Cardinals win three straight Southland Conference championships (1964, 1965, 1966) and earned All-Southland Conference honors in 1965 and 1967.
Kilgore finished his career as the most prolific pass catcher in LU history. At the time his career ended following the 1967 season, he was the school’s all-time leader in receptions with 119, in receiving yards with 1,769 and in touchdown receptions with 15.
Kilgore’s numbers stood the test of his time. At the time of his induction in 2006, he ranked second in school history in receptions, tied for second in touchdowns and third in receiving yards.
Kilgore led LU in receptions for three straight years from 1965 to 1967. He caught 39 passes for 509 yards and two touchdowns in 1965 as he was named All-Southland Conference. He caught 34 passes for 549 yards and six touchdowns in 1966. He closed out his career with 687 yards on 44 receptions with seven touchdowns, setting Lamar University single-season records in all three categories, as he earned All-Southland Conference honors.
Kilgore’s best game as a Cardinal was against UT Arlington in 1965 when he caught 10 passes for 150 yards. He signed as a free agent with the Cleveland Browns of the National Football League in 1968.
