Cardinal Hall of Honor
Ronnie Black’s medalist victory in the 1981 Southland Conference Tournament was a major point in his career and a catalyst for Lamar University’s future fortunes. When Black fired a clutch 71 in the final round, he boosted the Cardinals to their first team championship in eight years.
While Lamar went on to win four league titles in the next five years, Black became one of the premier young players on the PGA Tour. He collected wins in the 1983 Southern Open and the 1984 Anheuser-Busch Classic. He tied for sixth at the Masters Tournament in 1984. He finished 35th on the earnings list in 1984 and was 51st in 1989.
As a Lamar junior in 1980, Black’s high finish earned him a spot on the All-Southland Conference team. Prior to his 73-77-71=221 championship performance, Black took first place in the 1981 Cardinal Classic, finished second in the Lamar Intercollegiate Tournament wand was fourth in the strong Border Olympics field.
