Thousands of Lamar University athletes and students were the beneficiaries of Dr. James W. Shuffield’s professional and personal dedication.

One of the nation’s prominent leaders in sports medicine, Dr. Shuffield began serving as the Lamar athletic team physician in 1962. In his time at Lamar, he developed close personal contacts with most of the athletes, and attended several hundred Lamar athletic events.

In addition to his professional services, Dr. Shuffield was a fan and a supporter. He made significant personal and professional contributions to the Athletic Training Education Program, the Cardinal Club and other school organizations.
Dr. Shuffield was a past president of the Texas Society of Athletic Team Physicians and was the first physician to serve on the Texas Board of Athletic Trainers. An orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Shuffield was inducted into the Hall of Honor through the Special Award which recognizes outstanding acts and deeds.
