Marie-Louise “Midde” Hamrin dominated intercollegiate competition in distance events during her distinguished career at Lamar University. She earned five All-America awards in track and cross country, capturing two national championships in 1982.
In the 1982 Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) National Championships, Hamrin won the 5,000-meter run in a time of 16:03.75 and posted a time of 33:37.68 to win the grueling 10,000-meter run. She was third in the 10,000 meters at the AIAW national meet in 1981 and fourth in 1980. Hamrin qualified for the NCAA 5,000-meter run in 1983 but could not compete due to an injury.
Hamrin set LU records in the 1,500-, 3,000-, 5,000- and 10,000-meter runs. She was the 1981 winner of the Zaharias/Gray Award for being the top scholastic student-athlete. Ranked ninth in the world for the 10,000 meters in 1981, Hamrin re[presented Sweden in the 1984 Summer Olympics.
