Cardinal Hall of Honor
Richard Bjerke was a four-year letterman on the Lamar University football team from 1964 through 1967. A two-year starter at linebacker, Bjerke played on three Southland Conference championship teams (1964, 1965, 1966). LU posted an overall record of 25-14-1 during his four-year career.
Bjerke earned All-Southland Conference honors at linebacker in 1967, and was named Lamar’s Most Outstanding Defensive Player that same season.
During his playing career, Bjerke blocked two field goals and five punts, and intercepted two passes. A starter in 30 of 39 career games, he was a regular on special teams. He caused and recovered a fumble for a touchdown in a 28-23 win over Arkansas State in 1967.
Bjerke remained involved with the game of football as a Texas High School official with the Beaumont Chapter. He was selected as the head linesman for the 2002 Texas High School Coaches Association All-Star Game and was chosen as Official of the Week by Fox Sports Net in September 2002.
