Barry Collins was a four-year letterwinner on the Lamar University track team from 1967 to 1971. He helped LU capture the 1971 Southland Conference championship by finishing second in the one-mile run (4:11.9) and third in the three-mile run (14:55.6).

During his career, Collins set school records in the one-mile run and three-mile runs, and was an NCAA qualifier in the one-mile run in 1971. His time of 3:48.00 in the 1,500 meters ranked as the fourth-best time in school history at the time of his induction. He ran on the distance medley relay team that set a then-school record of 9:50.34.

Collins, who served as LU’s assistant track coach from 1980 to 1991 and head coach from 1991 to 1999, participated in 22 of Lamar’s first 25 conference championship teams. While serving as assistant coach, Collins coached the 1988 and 1989 American South Conference cross country championship teams. LU captured the 1992 Sun Belt Conference women’s outdoor track championship, as Collins was named Coach of the Year.
