Lamar University Athletics

Laura Broughton is considered by many to be the best volleyball player in Lamar University history. She was a two-time All-Southwest Region selection in 1976 and 1977. Broughton helped LU win a regional championship in 1977.

Lamar posted a brilliant 137-39 (.778) record during her three years. The Lady Cardinals were Texas Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) champions in 1975, as they finished seventh at the national AIAW championships. LU posted a 54-7-1 record in 1975.

Broughton also led the Lady Cards to Southwest Region AIAW championships in 1976 and 1977, as they placed ninth in the nation both seasons. LU defeated Alabama, Ohio State and Oregon in the 1976 National AIAW Tournament and beat Utah State and Illinois in the 1977 tournament.
