He set a Southland Conference record of 46.02 in the 400 meters at the 1982 NCAA Championships.

Hinds held the top five 400-meter times in LU history. He led the Cardinals to an eighth-place finish in the 1,600-meter relay at the 1979 NCAA Outdoor Championships and a 10th-place finish in 1982. Hinds was a member of the sprint medley and distance medley relay teams that set LU records.
