Cardinal Hall of Honor
The protégé of coach Ty Terrell, who had a great influence on his life, Doug Boone delivered one of Lamar University’s most stirring individual performances for his coach at the 1968 Southland Conference championship meet.
Pushed to great heights by the death of Terrell only three weeks earlier, Boone won two events at the Southland Conference championships, and said it was “for Coach Terrell.” At the conference championships, Boone win the three-mile run with a career-best time of 14:23.6 and the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 9:18.5.
Boone was also the SLC three-mile champion in 1967, when he won in a time of 14:52.4. He is the only Lamar University athlete to win the two conference titles in the three-mile run. Boone closed out his career in a dramatic flair by setting the Lamar University record by winning the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the Ty Terrell Relays with a time of 9:07.6. Boone also won the steeplechase at the 1967 Ty Terrell Relays in 9:11.8. His 4:08.4 time in the mile run at the 1968 Ty Terrell Relays was the fifth-best Lamar performance ever in that event.
