A member of the Lamar University 1970s All-Decade team, Bellard guided the Cardinals to a 53-35 (.602) record and two Southland Conference Championships during his career. Big Red boasted a 23-7 (.767) Southland mark during that stretch. Bellard's senior season, the Cardinals went 23-9 (.719) and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Championships before having their season come to an end against eventual National Champion Michigan State (the Spartans were led by future NBA legend Magic Johnson). A three-year letterwinner, Bellard played in 72 games during his career recording nearly 500 points and 200 rebounds. He also dished out 277 assists and 140 steals during his playing career. One of the Southland's top free throw shooters (.838), Bellard concluded his athletic career by earning All-Southland Conference honors.
