Junior Holmes was a four-year letterwinner in track at Lamar University from 1976 through 1979. He helped ignite the LU track program in 1978 to start a streak of 10 straight Southland Conference championships.

A six-time conference champion, Holmes won the 100-meter dash (10.8) and the 200-meter dash (21.2) at the 1978 SLC Championships, where he was named the Outstanding Track Performer. He repeated as the 100-meter (10.5) and 200-meter (20.9) champion at the 1979 SLC Championships. He was also a part of LU’s 400-meter relay teams that won the conference title in 1978 and 1979. He was also a six-time NCAA qualifier, twice each in the 100 meters, the 200 meters and the 400-meter relay.

Holmes set a Lamar University record in the 200 meters with a clocking of 20.63 seconds during the 1979 season. His clocking of 10.32 in the 100 meters in 1978 was the second-fest time in LU history at the time of his induction. Holmes set the school record in the indoor 55meters with a time of 6.25 seconds. He also ran on the record-setting 4x100-meter relay team (39.90) and 4x200-meter relay team (1:22.86).
