Al Caldwell has been Lamar University’s voice in the community for more than five decades since his arrival in Beaumont in 1962.

His first association with LU athletics was serving as an associate of Ed Dittert, the legendary LU announcer and the first-ever recipient of the Big Red Award.
Beginning with the 1978-79 season, Dave Hofferth joined Caldwell to form a broadcast team that was together for more than 20 years. Caldwell not only served as the color analyst, but produced the pregame, halftime and postgame shows. He has done countless coach and player interviews in addition to broadcasting numerous LU football and basketball games.

Caldwell’s rea; contribution is his endless support of LU athletics through coaches shows, sponsorships, fundraising for the cheerleaders and the band to attend postseason games and other special events for the athletic department over the years.

Caldwell is a recognized fixture in the community and is often called upon to serve as the master of ceremonies at LU events and area benefits, and is a dedicated leader through his civic service.

Caldwell is truly an ambassador of Lamar University and has gone out of his way to promote Cardinal athletics. He is certainly deserving of the Big Red Award, which is given to any non-coach or non-athlete who has significantly assisted the athletic program.
