Don Heller was a two-year letterwinner for the Lamar University men’s basketball team (1962-63, 1963-64). He averaged 15.8 points and 4.3 rebounds in 52 career games. He averaged 14.3 points per game in 1962-63 and 17.8 points per game in 1963-64. He scored a then-LU single-game record of 48 points against McNeese State on Feb. 12, 1964. He was named first team All-Southland Conference in 1964.

Heller helped LU win the 1963 Lone Star Conference championship with a 22-5 mark that included a 12-2 record in conference play. The Cardinals defeated Arkansas State in the semifinals of the NCAA College Division tournament before losing in overtime to Southern Illinois in the championship game.

Heller helped LU win the inaugural Southland Conference championship in 1964, earning first team All-Southland Conference honors along the way. The Cardinals posted an overall record of 19-6 that included a 7-1 mark in conference play. LU again advanced to the semifinals of the NCAA College Division tournament where they lost to Abilene Christian before defeating Colorado College for third place.
