Cardinal Hall of Honor
A four-year letterwinner on the Lamar University football team, Matt Burnett was one of LU’s all-time great defensive players. He was named first team All-Southland Conference nose guard in 1977.
Burnett was named LU’s Most Outstanding Defensive Lineman in 1977 and 1978. He was named Best Freshman Player in 1975.
Like many former LU football players, Burnett excelled after college as a high school football coach. As the head coach at Port Neches-Groves High School, he guided the Indians to the Class 4A state championship game in 1999.
