An outstanding two-sport star for the South Park Junior College Brahmas, the late F.S. (Spud) Braden was also a coach and administrator at Lamar College and a public official for the federal government.
Braden was a brilliant offensive back for the Brahmas in 1924 and 1925. He had the first great school passing record, as he completed 13 of 18 passes for 190 yards in a 1924 contest against Rusk Junior College.
In baseball, the East Texas native of Winnsboro was a star pitcher for the 1925 and 1926 teams. Braden served as John Gray’s assistant football coach for seven years, (1932 and 1934 through 1939). He was also dean of Lamar College before becoming the Beaumont postmaster for several years.
