Melonie (Floyd) Nelson, a four-year letterwinner on the Lamar University women’s volleyball team, was a two-time AIAW All-Southwest Region performer (1980, 1981).

She helped Lamar post a 37-10 record in 1978, as Lamar won the Southwestern AIAW Regional Tournament and placed ninth at the AIAW national tourney. In 1979, Lamar went 37-12, placing 14th at the AIAW National Championship.

Nelson set the school’s single-season record for block solos with 87 as a senior in 1981. That year she led the team in kills (280), total blocks (187) and digs (290).

Nelson was a member of the Junior National Team in 1979 that competed at the U.S. Sports Festival and was selected to play in the Pac-Rim Tournament in Hilo, Hawaii. She was also a member of the 1980 USA Enterprises Team that toured Brazil.
