Based on her intercollegiate and professional performances, Dawn Coe-Jones is the best female golfer to represent Lamar University.
Coe-Jones capped a brilliant career with the Lady Cardinals in 1983 when she earned first team All-America status with a 10th-place finish at the NCAA Championships.
Coe-Jones enjoyed more success than any other LU product in the LPGA. From 1984 through 1995, she pocketed $1.8 million in earnings on the LPGA Tour. For seven consecutive years (1989-1995), Coe-Jones’ consistent play enabled her to rank among the top 25 in season earnings. Her best season was 1990 when she finished 11th. She ranked 19th in 1989, 17th in 1992, 16th in 1993 and 17th in 1995 despite playing in just 16 events. She placed in the top 10 in six tournaments in 1995, seven of 25 events in 1990 and eight of 25 tourneys in 1992.
Coe-Jones captured her third tour victory in the 1995 LPGA Tournament Champions event. Her previous wins were the 1992 Women’s Kemper Open and the 1994 HealthSouth Palm Beach Classic. Noted for her accurate iron shots, she ranked 23rd in scoring average in 1995 and 26th in greens in regulation.
