B.B. Davis’ gaudy statistics, immense popularity and hometown-hero status significantly impacted the Lamar University basketball program.

During Davis’ distinguished career, the Cardinals reached a big-time level in basketball as Lamar enjoyed the most memorable era in its athletic history.

Davis compiled outstanding individual marks as the Cardinals notched four Southland Conference championships, reached three NCAA tournaments and posted an 89-34 overall record from the 1977-78 season through the 1980-81 season. Davis concluded his career as the second-leading scorer in Lamar history with 2,084 points and the second-leading rebounder with 1,122 boards. He was just the 33rd player in NCAA history to combine for 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds.

One of Beaumont’s all-time great prep players at French High School, Davis immediately became a force in the college ranks.  He led the Cardinals in scoring with a school freshman record of 474 points while earning the first of three All-Southland Conference awards. In both 1980 and 1981, Davis was voted to the U.S. Basketball Writers Association NCAA District 6 team.
