When the pressure was on, Mike Nugent delivered the clutch shots in compiling one of Lamar’s all-time great careers in a sensational span covering 1965 through 1968.

Nugent was the key performer for the Cardinals as Lamar raced to the NCAA College Division golf championships in 1967 and 1968. The Cardinals finished second in the 1966 national tournament.

Nugent was the Southland Conference medalist in 1967 and the NCAA runner-up that same year. He had a fabulous senior year in 1968, as he averaged 72.9 shots per round and captured the NCAA medalist championship. He also finished in fifth place in the University Division Tournament. Nugent also established two Lamar firsts in 1968, as he was chosen to represent LU in the elite East-West College All-Star Match and was named to the All-America golf team.
