An outstanding offensive end, Bob Fredrick’s career as a football player at Lamar spanned five years. Fredrick started two seasons in Lamar’s waning junior college years, played one year during the tough transition to playing four-year schools, and was a premier athlete on the Cardinals’ first two senior college teams in 1951 and 1952.

Frederick was an All-Southwestern Junior College Conference end on the great 1949 team, as he caught 35 passes for Lamar’s winningest team (10-2). In two seasons at the senior-college level, his 50 receptions for 704 yards stood as Lamar career records until 1966. He was an outstanding punter and defensive stalwart and displayed his all-around athletic skills by lettering in baseball and basketball.

Recognized as a defensive genius, Frederick had four nationally ranked teams statistically while serving as defensive coordinator from 1965 through 1975. As head football coach from 1976-78, he implemented several behind-the-scenes innovations to strengthen the long-range program. When Lamar revived its baseball program in 1967, Frederick was tabbed as coach, and the Cardinals came up with winners in his two seasons, including a .704 winning percentage in 1968.
