A two-sport star, Dan Hetzel played both baseball and football for Lamar University. A pitcher on the baseball team, Hetzel threw the second no-hitter in LU history, going seven innings in a 6-0 win over UT Arlington in 1969.

Hetzel posted a 4-0 record in 1970 with a team-leading 1.03 ERA. In 1969, Hetzel posted a 3-2 record with a team-leading 1.36 ERA. He was 3-2 with a team-best 0.33 ERA in 1968. He struck out 40 batters in 27 1/3 innings, including a career-high 14 strikeouts against Trinity.

Hetzel pitched 22 1/3 consecutive scoreless innings in 1969, a streak which ranked as the fifth longest in school history at the time of his induction.
A Beaumont native, Hetzel was a two-year starter on the offensive line for the LU football team. He also handled the punting duties for the Cardinals in 1968, posting a 34.4 average.
