Cardinal Hall of Honor
Tom Sewell was a standout basketball player for Lamar University, and at the time of his induction ranked fifth on the school’s all-time scoring list. He scored 1,496 points in just 89 games for a career average of 16.8 points per game.
Sewell was named the Southland Conference Player of the Year in 1984 after leading the Cardinals to a 26-5 record and an 11-1 mark in conference play. He scored 710 points as a senior, an average of 22.9 points per game, which was the second-most points scored in an LU season and the most points scored by a senior. He scored 30 or more points in a game three times, including a career-best 38 points against Texas-Pan American.
A two-time All-Southland Conference selection, Sewell helped LU compile a 71-20 record, one Southland Conference title, one NCAA Tournament appearances and two appearances in the NIT during his three seasons. He was the first LU player to be drafted in the first round of the NBA Draft, being selected by the Philadelphia 76ers in 1984.
