Cardinal Hall of Honor
A true triple-threat performer, Bobby Jancik was named to the 1961 All-American team.
As a halfback, Jancik did it all. He was sensational as a kick returner, dangerous as a receiver and an excellent runner. Some of his feats were of the Jack Armstrong variety, such as the 90-yard kickoff return against Southwest Texas State in 1961 that earned Lamar a 7-7 tie. But that was nothing compared to his superlatives in the 1961 season-opening 38-34 win over Northeast Louisiana. In that game, Jancik caught touchdown passes of 64 and 55 yards in the last six minutes to rally Lamar from a 10-point deficit.
Jancik led the Lone Star Conference in scoring in 1961 with 62 points although he was injured most of the season. A stop-and-go type runner, his 14.3 career average for punt returns is outstanding. Although he only played two seasons at Lamar, he still ranked high in several categories at the time of his induction, including seventh in all-purpose offense with 2,033 yards. He was also a star track performer for two years in the high jump and the javelin. Jancik played six seasons with the Houston Oilers of the American Football League, earning Rookie of the Year honors in 1962.Â
