Cardinal Hall of Honor
Burton Murchison shattered records from 1984 through 1987 to become the most prolific running back ever for Lamar University.
At the end of his decorated career, the Woodville product had a dozen marks etched in the all-time LU record book.
In 1985, he became the first Lamar running back ever to be selected first team All-America in NCAA Division I-AA. Murchison was sensational that year, as he broke school records for most yards rushing in a season (1,547), most rushing yards in a game (259 against Rice) and most 100-yard games in a season with eight.
Murchison’s most impressive career records are for all-purpose yardage (4,203), rushing yards (3,598) and most 100-yard games (13). His other highlights include leading the Cardinals in rushing four consecutive seasons, finishing third in all-time scoring with 170 points and being the first LU player to run for at least 200 yards in a game more than once, a feat he performed three times.
