Cardinal Hall of Honor
Barbara Hickey was a four-year letterwinner on the Lamar University women’s basketball team from 1988-89 through 1991-92. She also competed in the high jump for the LU women’s track and field team.
During her four-year career, Hickey helped the Lady Cardinals post an 87-31 record, claim the 1991 American South Conference championship and the 1992 Sun Belt Conference championship. That 1991 squad advanced to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament.
At the time of her induction, Hickey ranked fourth on LU’s all-time scoring list with 1,370 points, third in field goals made (587), third in field-goal percentage (.568), second in assists (300), third in steals (177), seventh in blocked shots (61) and third in games played (112).
Hickey averaged a career-best 15.4 points per game during the 1989-90 season. She earned All-American South Conference honors in 1991 after helping Lamar post an all-time best school record of 29-4. She averaged 15.3 points per game in the 1991-92 season to earn All-Sun Belt Conference honors.
A native of Orangefield, Texas, Hickey was also a standout on the Lamar University women’s track and field team. She was a three-time conference champion in the high jump (1989, 1990, 1991), qualifying for the NCAA Championships in 1989 and 1990.
Hickey’s best effort in the high jump was 6 feet, 0.25 inches, which was second in LU history at the time of her induction. She set the Ty Terrell Track and Ty Terrell Relays record in the high jump with an effort of 5 feet, 10 inches.
