Cardinal Hall of Honor
The 11-year coaching tenure of Dr. Lewis Hilley ranks as the greatest period of athletic accomplishments in the history of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics and Lamar University.
Hilley coached Lamar tennis and golf teams from 1952 to 1962. He won 20 championships, nine in golf and 11 straight in tennis, in the Lone Star Conference.
Lamar dominated the NAIA with six consecutive tennis championships from 1955 to 1960, and five national golf crowns. Hilley also promoted his teams. The great tennis teams played and defeated the likes of Southern California, UCLA, Stanford, Florida and others in the United States, and universities from Mexico and England. He coached six undefeated tennis team, and his last four squads won 19 straight dual matches.
