Cardinal Hall of Honor
Recognized as one of the world’s great distance runners of his era, Ian Stewart dominated the one-mile, two-mile and three-mile events in the Lone Star Conference and NAIA from 1959-62.
The native of England captured five conference championships and two national titles for the Cardinals. He won Lamar’s first national track crown in 1960, setting the NAIA record in the 5,000 meters in 14:51.3. He captured the three-mile run in 1961 with a record time of 14:18.7.
In the Lone Star Conference, Stewart won the two-mile crown for four consecutive years and was a one-mile run winner in 1960. The 1960 season was a tremendous year for Stewart, as he won three races in three meets and had a stretch of nine straight victories in the two-mile run. Stewart’s best time for the two-mile run was 9:07.2. Stewart won 42 events in his career, including 17 in the 1960 season.
