Cardinal Hall of Honor
John K. Barlow played a significant role in making Lamar University a national golf power in the NCAA College Division in the mid-1960s. His decision to play for the Cardinals had as much impact on the program as did his accomplishments.
A standout prep player at South Park High School in Beaumont, Barlow and one other local standout came to Lamar as freshmen. Three years later, when Lamar captured the 1967 NCAA College Division championship, the Cardinals had five local products on the six-member team. During Barlow’s career, Lamar won four Southland Conference titles and the NCAA crown.
Barlow was the SLC medalist in 1965, when he shot a conference and school record 205 total for 54 holes. He finished third in the 1967 NCAA Tournament with an 8-under 280 for 72 holes. His career average for Lamar was 75.9 shots per round.
Through his association with his family in the operation of several area golf courses, Barlow continued to provide assistance to the Lamar golf program.
