Cardinal Hall of Honor
When Elmo A. “Beans” LaBauve pulled on his football togs for the South Park Junior College Brahmas in September 1924, it was the beginning of two major experiences in his life. He was playing football for the first time and starting a 55-year association with Lamar University.
There wasn’t a football team at his native High Island, but LaBauve wound up as one of the star halfbacks on the 1924 and 1925 teams. Statistics from that era are not available, but newspaper clippings from the time claimed him to be an outstanding football player and a pitcher in baseball.
Since his athletic days at South Park Junior College, LaBauve remained a behind-the-scenes supporter of the institution. The founder and owner of LaBauve Construction Company, he donated time and equipment in assisting with the moving of the Spindletop Monument and projects around the current campus.
