Cardinal Hall of Honor
A magician with the basketball, James Barrum was the first great backcourt player for the Lamar Cardinals.
With Barrum providing the floor leadership, Lamar came from also-rans to a pair of Lone Star Conference championships in Barrum’s last two seasons (1960-61 and 1961-62). Barrum was first-team all-conference both years.
He scored 384 points in 1960-61 and 400 points in 1961-62 en route to chalking up 975 career points. As was his flair, Barrum reached his greatest heights in the big games. He led the 97-91 win over Howard Payne for Lamar’s first outright basketball championship in 1961 by scoring 32 points.
