A three-time Southland Conference champion and NCAA All-American, Frank Montebello still holds school and Southland Conference records.

His time of 4:01.6 in the mile run at the Philadelphia/MLK Games in 1980 set a school  and conference record. Montebello also ran legs on record-holding indoor and outdoor distance medley relay teams. He was the SLC outdoor champion in the 1,500-meter run (3:48.95) and the 3,000-meter steeplechase (8:52.1) in 1980 and again in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (8:46.65) in 1982.

At one time, Montebello held outdoor school records in the 800m, 1,500m, mile, 3,000-meter steeplechase, and distance-medley relay, while holding indoor records in the 1,000-yard run, the 880 and the 4x800 relay. He was a three-time all-conference performer in cross country and a two-time NCAA qualifier in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.

Montebello was the 1982 Southland Conference Outstanding Track Performer, a 12-time all-conference performer in track and was an All-American in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 1982.
