One of Lamar’s most versatile athletes, Johnny Fuller was a standout split end and punt returner for the Southland Conference football championship teams of 1964, 1965 and 1966, as well as a start pole vaulter and decathlete in track.

Fuller consistently vaulted over 15 feet, and was Lamar’s first 15-foot vaulter with a record effort of 15 feet, 3 inches in 1966. He also ran on championship 440- and 880-yard relay teams and finished fourth in the decathlon at the 1968 Drake Relays. He earned eight letters in the two sports.

In football, Fuller caught 89 passes for 1,301 yards and 12 touchdowns. He led the 1966 Cardinals in scoring with 48 points. Fuller was also a brilliant punt returner, setting school records with 626 yards in returns in a career and the single-season mark with 344 yards in 1967. Fuller played five years with the San Francisco 49ers (1968-72) before finishing his career with the New Orleans Saints in 1973.
