Cardinal Hall of Honor
A classic example of the student-athlete, big Roy Mazzagatti was Lamar University’s first senior college All-American.
The Beaumont native, who starred in the prep ranks at South Park, earned All-American decorations in 1952. Mazzagatti was also a first-team All-Lone Star Conference defensive pick and named to the second team on offense in 1952.
Mazzagatti played three years during Lamar’s final junior college fling, 1948-1950, and lettered on the 1951 and 1952 senior college teams. His line coach at Lamar, J.B. Higgins, claimed: “Roy Mazzagatti was an outstanding lineman and would have been outstanding on any team in any era.” Mazzagatti was also an honor student and a student-body leader at Lamar. He went on to become the head of the mathematics department at Miami Dade College in Florida.
