Cardinal Hall of Honor
Occasionally, the beginning of a strong tradition in an athletic program can be attributed to the contributions of a certain type of athlete. Lamar University can trace the start of its great heritage in basketball to Johnny Johnston, its first superstar.
Johnston provided the basketball program what it needed during his three seasons. He became the “big” center who helped the Cardinals to a 54-24 record in three years and to its first cage title in 1960-61.
In leading Lamar to its first championship, Johnston scored 558 points for a 20.7 average, and hauled down a school-record 421 rebounds. He also shot 62.8 percent from the floor in earning All-Lone Star Conference recognition. At the time of his induction, he ranked sixth in all-time scoring and fourth in career rebounding at Lamar after finishing with 1,327 points and 908 rebounds.
