Cardinal Hall of Honor
Winning was Phillip Primm’s strongest asset, although the diminutive redhead set most of Lamar University’s passing and total offense records in his era.
Primm had a flair for winning, and he always won the big games in guiding the Cardinals to three straight Southland Conference championships from 1964 to 1966. At 5-foot-11 and 175 pounds, he wasn’t in the classic mold of a quarterback, yet Primm was a two-time All-Southland Conference selection (1965-66), the league’s player of the year in 1966 and the all-decade quarterback for 1964-73 in the Southland Conference.
Primm, who lost only two SLC battles, set Lamar records for career passing yardage (4,036 yards) and career total offense (4,379 yards) while starting 33 of the 35 games he played. By 1979, he still held career records for completion percentage (.500), pass completions (287) and touchdown passes (39) in addition to single-season marks for completion percentage (.519), touchdown passes (16) and total offense (1,760 yards) in 1966 when he led the Southland Conference.
