BEAUMONT, Texas – On a night when Lamar University honored its history, history was made. Freshman
Davion Buster came off the bench to score a then career-high 16 points to lead the Cardinals past league-leading, and previously undefeated, Sam Houston State for the program's 1,000
th victory. Due to Buster's offensive spark, the Cardinals surged out to a 15-point first-half lead and never looked back.
Â
What made the victory even more special was the Saturday contest served as reunion weekend for the Cardinals who welcomed back to campus former coaches and players who helped build the tradition of success that defines the program. At halftime, the Cardinals recognized the 50
th year anniversary of Jack Martin's 1968-69 squad and Billy Tubbs' 1978-79 team. In addition, the Cardinals also unveiled the jersey of former great James Gulley, which now hangs in the rafters of the Montagne Center.
Â
The victory – LU's third consecutive – set the tone for what would be one of the greatest finishes to a season in program history. The Cardinals entered the 2019 SLC tournament as the league's hottest team winners of eight straight and nine of 10. The Cards recorded their 20
th win in the opening round of the tournament.
