Top 25 – Rookie Guides LU to Revenge Victory

Now that the academic year is over, and before we begin the 2019-20 season, LamarCardinals.com wanted to take a look back at what we felt were the Top 25 Moments of the 2018-19 season. The top 25 list was voted on by a panel of 15 members of the LU senior and external staff.

No. 23

BEAUMONT, Texas – In a rare quirk to the 2019 Lamar University men's tennis schedule, the Cardinals wound up playing New Orleans twice in 2019 – the first time came early in the season at the LSU Invite and the second two months later in Southland Conference play. The Privateers took the first meeting in a down-to-the-wire clash that saw UNO pick up a three-set victory on court No. 5 for the overall win.

The second meeting between the two schools would be almost a mirror image of the first. After the Cardinals fell behind 3-2 with two matches remaining, LU battled back with a victory at No. 4 singles. The win at No. 4 tied the match at 3-3 with only court 5 remaining. Once again, the match on court five would go to a third set but this time it would be freshman Joshua Taylor competing for the Cards. The rookie played with confidence beyond his years defeating New Orleans' Nicolas Kramer, 7-6 (7-3), 2-6, 6-4, for the overall win.

"The only difference between rematch and the one at the beginning of the season was the clinching point came down to a different player," said LU head coach Scott Shankles. "For UNO, it was Kramer in the deciding match both times but this time he had to face Joshua Taylor. I think what really helped Josh clinch was the fan support that afternoon. We had an amazing crowd that day. I've always felt that way about the Beaumont community. We have a great tennis fan base here and they're vocal in their support."
