Top 25 – Zae Giles Diving Catch at McNeese

Now that the academic year is over, and before we begin the 2019-20 season, LamarCardinals.com wanted to take a look back at what we felt were the Top 25 Moments of the 2018-19 season. The top 25 list was voted on by a panel of 15 members of the LU senior and external staff.

No. 10

BEAUMONT, Texas – The Lamar University football team was in the midst of one of the greatest runs in program history when it made the trip to Lake Charles, La., for the regular-season finale against rival McNeese. LU entered the game riding the wave of a five-game win streak, while the Cowboys were ranked 22nd in the nation and fighting for a spot in the NCAA FCS Playoffs.

In addition to the national rankings, the Cowboys had dominated the series against LU historically owning a 26-9-1 (.736) all-time record and falling to the Cardinals only once since the program's return in 2010. It appeared that would be the case in the 2018 matchup as McNeese scored late to take a three-point lead with just over three minutes remaining.

Following the McNeese score, Big Red took over from its own 14 and got runs of 18 and 28 yards on the first two plays of the drive, which set up the biggest play of the game, and arguably the second-most important play of the season (more on that later this summer).

On 1st and 10 from the McNeese 40, senior quarterback Darrel Colbert, Jr. was forced out of the pocket when he caught a glimpse of Zae Giles sprinting down the center of the field. Colbert heaved the ball down the field in Giles' direction. At the last second, Giles leaped forward extending his fingertips to make a miraculous grab at the Cowboy one-yard line stunning the McNeese crowd into silence. The reception set up a one-yard TD run by Colbert on the very next play handing the Red and White its second victory over McNeese since the program's return and just the 10th all-time. In addition to earning bragging rights, the win ended McNeese's hopes at the postseason while catapulting LU into the playoffs for the first time in program history.
