BEAUMONT, Texas – The benchmark for a successful season in collegiate hoops has long been 20 wins. Prior to the 2018-19 season, Lamar University had finished just one win shy of that mark in each of the two previous campaigns. This past year, the Cardinals entered postseason play needing one win to reach the 20-win plateau and senior
Josh Nzeakor wasn't going to let the opportunity slip.
Â
Finishing the regular season as one of the hottest teams in the league – winners of eight straight – Big Red opened the conference championship tournament against Houston Baptist. Nzeakor recorded one of the best games of his career recording 25 points and pulling down 13 rebounds to lead the Cardinals to an opening-round two-point victory. Nzeakor's performance became even more vital as the already shorthanded Cards lost their starting point guard in the game's opening half.
Â
For Nzeakor, it was the sixth time he recorded a double-double in 2018-19 and the 18
th time in his career. He wrapped up his career by being named to the 2019 SLC All-Tournament team. It marked the program's first 20-win season since the 2011-12 season.
