Women's golf heads to Bob Hurley ORU Shootout

BEAUMONT, Texas – The Lamar University women's golf team competes in its second event in as many weeks when it heads to Tulsa, Okla., to compete in the Bob Hurley ORU Shootout that gets underway at 8 a.m. Monday.

The Cardinals look to build upon last week's third-place finish at the Tignanelli Towson Invitational.

"I thought we were the best team there," LU coach Jessica Steward said of last week's tournament. "We made a few mistakes that cost us. We learned from it, and we'll be better for the experience."

LU freshman Elodie Chapelet, playing in her first collegiate event, finished fourth at Towson with a 6-over-par 150 for 36 holes. LU's Wenny Chang, the two-time Southland Conference Women's Golfer of the Year, finished tied for eighth at 8-over 152, bouncing back from a tough first round with a 2-over-par 74 in the second round.

"The good news is that we get a chance for immediate redemption," Steward said of playing back-to-back tournaments. "The tough part is that the players are tired and have missed some classes."

This week's 18-team event is hosted by Oral Roberts University. The teams are scheduled to play two rounds on Monday and one round on Tuesday at the Meadowbrook Country Club on a par-71, 6,013-yard layout. The Cardinals will be one of six Southland Conference teams in the field, joining Houston Baptist, Incarnate Word, Sam Houston State, Stephen F. Austin and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Other teams seeking the title this week are Arkansas State, Drake, Grand Canyon University, McLennan Community College, North Dakota, Northern Iowa, Oklahoma Christian, Oklahoma City, Oral Roberts, UTEP, Utah Valley and Wichita State.

"There are some very good teams in the field," Steward said. "We'll also get our first look at some of our conference competitors."

Last season, the Cardinals tied for fifth in the event out of a field of 15 teams, finishing 11 strokes behind champion Sam Houston State. Chang finished tied for third at 4-over-par for 54 holes.

Joining Chapelet and Chang in the LU lineup this week are junior Felicia Sauceda, who tied for 20th last week at 11-over, junior Olivia Le Roux, who was tied for 32nd at 14-ovber-par, and freshman Maia Jessup, who tied for 42nd at 20-over-par while competing as an individual in her first collegiate event.

Le Roux, who posted an 84 in the first round last week, bounced back with a solid 74 in the second round.

"Olivia rushed things a little bit in the first round," Steward said. "She was able to focus on the process, and played much better in the second round. "Felicia shot a 75 on the first day and had an 80 on the second day, but she fought hard that day. She kept battling. I believe that golfers are defined by their bad rounds, not their good rounds. Felicia didn't fold under pressure.

"Maia got some good experience last week, and earned her spot in the lineup. She deserves this opportunity."

The Cardinals won't have much opportunity to rest after this week, as they travel to the Bearkat Women's Invitational, hosted by Sam Houston State, set for Oct. 3-4 in Huntsville, Texas.
