Cards Look to Extend Home Win Streak Saturday

BEAUMONT, Texas – The Cardinals of Lamar University close out its four-game home stand on Saturday, Jan. 5, when they host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in Southland Conference action at 2 p.m. at the Montange Center. The Cardinals will be looking for its 35th straight win at home.

The Islanders come to Beaumont with a record of 7-5 and 1-0 in SLC action. They are coming off a 73-65 victory at Central Arkansas. A&M-Corpus Christi trailed 52-45 heading into the fourth quarter but outscored the Sugar Bears by 15 in the fourth to come away with the win. The Islanders shot 41 percent in the contest.
 
A&M-Corpus Christi has two players averaging double-figures. They are led by Dalesia Booth, who is scoring 14.4 points per game. She scored a career-high 33 points on Dec. 31st. Alexes Bryant follows as she averages 11.2 points per game. Bryant also lead the team with 21 blocks over the Islanders first 12 games. Bryant also leads the team in rebounding averaging 6.0 rebounds per game.
 
As a team, the Islanders are averaging, 65.8 points per game and are only allowing opponents to score 56.5 points per game. They are shooting 41.2 percent from the floor and are shooting 32.9 percent (51-for-155) on three pointers. The Islanders are forcing its opponents into 21.3 turnovers per game and holding opponents to shoot 35.4 percent from the floor.
 
The Islanders were picked to finish fifth in the Southland Conference Preseason Poll.
 
LAST TIME OUT – HOUSTON BAPTIST
Leading by four points after three quarters of play, the Lamar University Cardinals opened the fourth quarter on an 11-1 run to pull away from Houston Baptist University en route to a 63-50 victory on Wednesday night in Southland Conference action.
 
The win for the Cards improves them to 8-4 on the season and 1-0 in SLC action. The Huskies dropped to 5-6 on the season and 0-1 in SLC play.
 
Miya Crump led the Cards with 18 points on 6-of-11 shooting. Crump also had a team-high with seven rebounds. Moe Kinard rounded out the double-figure scorers for LU with 16 points. LU shot 32.8 percent in the contest. With the win, LU stretched its home winning streak to 34 straight games.
 
"We knew this would be a tough game tonight," remarked Head Coach Robin Harmony. "This was our first game since December 20th and HBU is a good team and are coached very well. We came into the game not focused but we found a way to win tonight."
 
UP NEXT
Following the contest against the Islanders, the Cardinals return to action on Wednesday, Jan. 9 when they travel to New Orleans to face the University of New Orleans. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. from Lakefront Arena.
