Cards Look for Ninth Straight Win Saturday

BEAUMONT, Texas – The Lamar University women's basketball team will look for its ninth straight win on Saturday, Jan. 26 when they travel to Huntsville, Texas to face Sam Houston State. The Cards enter the contest with a record of 13-4 and 6-0 in SLC action.

Sam Houston State enters the contest with the Cards coming off a 66-55 victory over Northwestern State. The win for the Bearkats is its second straight. Against the Lady Damons, Sam Houston State shot 36.7 percent from the field and committed 22 turnovers. Sam Houston State had three players score in double-figures, led by Lydia Baxter, who scored 16 points. Baxter had a double-double and led the team with 19 rebounds, seven of which were on the offensive end.
 
Sam Houston State is led in scoring by Jaylonn Walker who is averaging 15.1 points per game. Walker leads a trio of players scoring in double-figures as Jenniffer Oramas is second on the team scoring, 11.1 points per game and Amber Leggett follows averaging 11.0 points per game. Baxter leads the team in rebounding averaging 8.6 rebounds per game. On the season, Baxter has pulled down 62 offensive rebounds.
 
As a team, Sam Houston State is averaging 72.3 points per game and are shooting 41.7 percent from the floor. The Bearkats scored a season-high 101 points against Wiley College on Nov. 19. Opponents are averaging 65.5 points per game and shooting 38.7 percent from the floor on the season.
 
The Bearkats were picked to finish 13th in the Southland Conference Preseason Poll.
 
LAST TIME OUT – INCARNATE WORD
Behind the play of Chastadie Barrs and Moe Kinard the Lamar University women's basketball team won its eighth straight game with a 77-51 victory over the University of the Incarnate Word, on Wednesday night.
 
With the win, Lamar improves to 13-4 and 6-0 in Southland Conference play. UIW falls to 1-16 on the season and 1-5 in SLC action.
 
"This is a really hard place to play and UIW is a good team," remarked Head Coach Robin Harmony. "Our kids came out and played for 40 minutes. They had a bunch of energy and every time you play on the road it's tough to win. We had a nice outcome tonight."

Barrs led the Cardinals with 23 points, seven steals, and six assists. Kinard followed with 21 points on the night. Jadyn Pimentel rounded out the double-figure scorers with 11 points. Briana Laidler collected a career-high 13 rebounds. LU shot 39 percent in the contest.
 
UP NEXT
The Cardinals return to action on Wednesday, Jan. 30 when they host Nicholls in Southland Conference action. Tip is set for 7 p.m. at the Montagne Center.
