Eason Wang gets an ace at Border Olympics

LAREDO, Texas – Eason Wang's hole-in-one highlighted the Lamar Cardinals' effort on the first day of the Border Olympics.

Wang used a 7-iron to ace the 166-yard seventh hole at the Laredo Country Club in the second round of the day.

The Cardinals head into Saturday's round in 14th place in the 17-team field. LU is at 7-over-par 583 through 36 holes, 16 shots behind tournament-leading Arkansas State. In all, 10 teams shot par or better on the 7,375-yard, par-72 layout.

"Today was a day of ups and downs," LU coach Jessie Mudd said. "We had a lot of big numbers, but we made a lot of birdies and eagles, including Eason's hole-in-one. It's good to see some red numbers up on the board."

LU's Cody Banach is tied for 37th in the 97-player field at 1-over-par 145 after rounds of 71 and 74 on Friday. Juho Kurikka and Louis Bemberg are tied for 43rd at 146, Sam Dumez is tied for 48th at 147, while Wang is tied for 65th at 149.

Sam Houston State teammates William Holcomb and Camden DeBonis are tied for the individual lead at 8-under 136, one shot better than Billy Tom Sargent of Western Kentucky.

The Cardinals enter Saturday's final round just nine strokes behind sixth-place Stephen F. Austin.

"We have to go out and be aggressive on Saturday, and climb up the leaderboard as much as possible," Mudd said.

FORECAST: The teams will tee off under mostly cloudy skies at 8 a.m. Saturday with a temperature of 67 degrees. By the time the tourney ends, the golfers will be plying under sunny skies with the temperature near 90 degrees.

UP NEXT: The Cardinals return to action when they compete at the Valspar Collegiate Invitational, set for March 19-21 in Palm City, Florida.
