HOUSTON, Texas — Behind 30 birdies and three eagles, the Lamar University men's golf team surged to the top of the leaderboard to finish tied for third after two rounds on Day 1 of the Bayou City Collegiate Classic at Westwood Golf Club on Monday.
The Cardinals shot the total score of 574 (289-285) to finish 12 strokes behind second place Houston.
LU is currently tied with Louisiana Lafayette, holding a six-shot lead over UT Arlington and Abilene Christian, which are tied for fifth.
Three Cardinals are in the top 25 on the individual leaderboard.
Nathan Woodham is tied for seventh place after shooting the total score of 140 (71-69).
Woodham carded an eagle on the first hole which fared well for LU during the first round. Four other players birdied the hole.
Woodham shot two under par on the front nine in the first round while he closed out the second round shooting three under on the back nine with three birdies and zero bogeys.
He tallied three straight birdies on the fifth, sixth and seventh holes on the front nine during round two.
Fermin Martinez and
Filip Widepalm each had an eagle on the sixth hole during the second round.
LU made 12 birdies in the opening round while it carded 18 during the second round.
During the second round, Martinez finished the front nine one under while
David Schneider Jerez made three birdies to finish the front nine at two under.
Matthew Bramford had a bogey-free back nine during the second round with two birdies.
Rice leads the pack with a two-stroke lead over Houston.
Houston's Grant Doggett, who sits atop the individual leaderboard, tied the tournament record for the low 36-hole score of 133 (66-67).
