BEAUMONT, Texas – Lamar University freshman
Elodie Chapelet was named the Southland Conference Women's Golfer of the Year as well as the conference's Freshman of the Year, the SLC office announced Thursday.
Chapelet finished in the top five in all nine events she competed in this season, including four first-place finishes. She also went 3-0 in match play. The native of Souraide, France, averaged 73.92 shots per round over 25 round with a low round of 67.
It's the third straight year that Lamar University can boast of the Women's Golfer of the Year. LU's
Wenny Chang received the honor in 2015 and 2016. LU's Therese Nilsson won the award in 2009. Chapelet is the fifth LU women's golfer to be named Freshman of the Year, joining Hillary Zeigler (2005), Nilsson (2006), Linda Persson (2007) and Chang (2014).
She is just the second golfer to be named the Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year in the same season, joining Lisa Westman of McNeese, who was the Freshman of the Year and Co-Player of the Year in 2004.
"Elodie had a year to be proud of at any age, never mind the fact that she is only a freshman," LU coach
Jessica Steward said. "She has the potential to be the best golfer in Lamar University's history if she continues to work hard and is open to learning. I have no doubts that she will continue to be the best player in the Southland Conference year after year."
Chapelet, who finished fourth at the Southland Conference Tournament, was one of three LU golfers named to this year's All-Southland Conference squad. Chapelet was named to the first team, while Chang and
Olivia Le Roux were named to the second team.
Chang, a senior, averaged 75.96 strokes per round over 25 rounds, with a low round of an even-par 71 at the Bearkat Women's Invitational. Chang was a medalist in one event. She had four top-five finishes and six top-10 finishes in nine events this season. Chang was named to the all-conference team in each of her four years at LU, earning first-team status in 2014, 2015 and 2016, helping the Cardinals win the conference tournament in each of her first three seasons.
"Wenny had a tremendous career at LU," Steward said. "Being Player of the Year twice is a great accomplishment."
Le Roux, a junior, averaged 76.20 strokes over 25 rounds with a low round of an even-par 72 at the HBU Husky Invitational. Le Roux had five top-10 finishes, including three in the top five, earning medalist honors once. Le Roux capped her season by tying for eighth place at the Southland Conference Tournament.
"Olivia also had a year to be proud of," Steward said. "She continues to show steady improvement from season to season. Olivia is a pleasure to coach, and I will look to her for a great deal of leadership next year."
